Our Plans

The Affected Generation is a youth led organization started by two inspiring youth Charlie Abrams and Jeremy Clark. We started this organization to get other youth voices heard in our fight for the educational and political side of climate change. Based in Oregon our goals are to get our generation and the next learning the right facts behind climate change through school based curriculum. We simply believe we can not solve an issue if there is no factual awareness about it.

Our second goal is to get a carbon cap and trade on our beautiful home state to effectively and efficiently stop the highest polluters in Oregon and in the end get them to switch to clean renewable energy.

Our generation is feeling the drastic effects of climate change and that is why we need to step up and act out. We are the Affected Generation and now is the time to make a difference.

Our Priorities

Our focus has changed a lot throughout the years but we have singled out the three most important things to Affected generation and have worked to improve them in our city, state, and country.

Carbon Cap and Trade

Clean Energy Jobs Bill

Affecting strictly the highest polluters in Oregon Clean Energy Jobs is the most effective way to have the largest top-down impact in our state. Carbon pricing is picking up steam as more than every 1 in 5 states in America have implemented similar bills while their economy has been thriving. Now is the time to join the carbon pricing movement and have Oregon be an environmental leader again.

Youth Voice

Our Generation

While going to climate meetings and events it has been surprising witnessing the lack of youth voice on an issue that concerns us the most. Our generation will no doubt have the hardest time with this issue even though we did not create it. Although we do not have the billions of dollars on our side we are fighting against the largest corporations because we do not have much more time to act.

Climate Education

School Resolutions

We know first hand if you are not educated about an issue it is impossible to solve it. This is why since sixth grade testifying to school boards to get climate education bills passed has been a necessary responsibility for us. We need to get the correct facts behind climate change taught in standardized school curriculum to efficiently educate youth on the affirmative science behind the most pressing issue facing our planet today.

March With Us

Join the global movement, on March 15th at Portland City Hall at 11:00am speakout, march and protest along the other hundreds of students and youth to get OUR voices heard in a fight for our future and demand our lawmakers to enact a strong climate policy that will lead the Affected Generation to a cleaner future. The event will have speeches from inspiring youth, organizations to learn and be a part of, and a huge march and protest around City Hall. Come with Affected Generation to get your youice heard and stand up to the most pressing issue facing our world. #FridaysForFuture #YouthStrikesUSA #AffectedGeneration

Who We Are

We are Charlie Abrams and Jeremy Clark, and since fourth grade, we have been passionate about fighting climate change. Our work has changed in the past six years, as has our story. We started out on our local radio station and immediately got the attention of others like the founders of Our Climate. Through speaking and working with them we got introduced to the political side of climate change and grew apart of others like Renew Oregon and Citizens Climate Lobby. CCL showed us what it was like to lobby on the other side of the country in Washington D.C. and through Renew we have lobbied, testified, met with our governor and worked alongside our elected officials. All this action caught the attention of awards like the Children’s Climate Prize in Stockholm Sweden, the Youth Eco Hero Prize, and international youth summits. In just sixth grade Charlie testified in front of his public school board and ended up getting climate change taught as a man-made fact in Portland Public Schools to over 60,000 kids while Jeremy’s video of him testifying later that year went viral and was on Leonardo DiCaprio’s Instagram. Our personal goals now are not just to inspire and educate others but to see our effects in the legislation that our states and country need to implement. We try to capitalize youth voice in such an important issue because the time for action is now.

Come Lobby with Us

Last year the Oregon Capitol had the largest turnout for an environmental issue in the history of our state. This not only shows how important a carbon price is for Oregon but puts pressure on our politicians. This legislative session we need as much youth as possible, in every meeting we have been in with our state or country’s representatives our voice has stood out because they are not used to hearing a 14-year-old’s view on climate legislation and every single word we say leaves more of an impact. You are alive at a critical time where your voice can change the fate of Oregon and our future. We have seen the effects of climate change on the news below the “Record Breaking” title and we know this has not occurred in history because this is creating history. Our generation, the Affected Generation has the opportunity to advocate for action in Oregon to be an environmental leader again. We need the largest youth voice Oregon has seen to show how much this matters to us. Join us this legislative session to demand a sustainable climate for all.

Every generation has faced immense challenges that put everything on the line. In the past century, brave young people helped conquer World War ll, the Vietnam War and racial segregation. This generation, we’re facing the single greatest crisis of all time: climate change. Climate change threatens our families, ecosystems, economic stability, air, water, and food. You are alive at a critical time that determines the fate of humanity. It’s our responsibility to advocate for action in Oregon to make our state an environmental leader again. Join us this legislative session to demand a sustainable climate for all.

Carbon Cap and Trade

We believe that climate change is the most critical issue facing humanity today. Anthropogenic warming jeopardizes nearly everything we take for granted: food, clean drinking water, housing, and even air. It’s clear now more than ever that the only way to combat climate change is a common sense climate policy. For over a decade, environmental organizations across the state have been pushing for a market-based solution to climate change. In the 2019 legislative session here in Oregon, we’re pushing a monumental piece of legislation that would put our beautiful state at the forefront of the climate battle in America.

Clean Energy Job’s Purpose

The bill is called “Clean Energy Jobs”, and it’s a piece of legislation called “cap and trade”. Clean Energy Jobs selects Oregon’s largest polluters, that is, companies who emit over 25,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually, and forces them to buy licenses for every ton of carbon they emit. The sum of licenses available would gradually decrease, but experts predict that Clean Energy Jobs would generate on average 700 million dollars of revenue annually. That’s money that will be invested in lower-income communities, efficient irrigation systems for Oregon farmers, renewable energy job training for displaced fossil fuel workers, and the communities hit first and worst by climate change.

The goal of Clean Energy Jobs is to make renewable energy the cheapest option available, thus forcing even the greediest of corporations to switch to a planet and people-friendly alternative.

The 2019 Session

In the 2018 legislative session, we made immense progress, and experts predict that 2019 could be the year Clean Energy Jobs finally crosses the finish line. Even better, we have environmental supermajorities in both the House and Senate, along with an environmental champion as governor.

The momentum for Clean Energy Jobs is building, but we’re up against some of the largest corporations in Oregon, and they’ve got a lot more money than we do. This year, we need your help down in Salem to secure a brighter future for our generation. Come join us in Salem on February 18th, 2019 to have conversations with your elected officials and explain why Clean Energy Jobs is the solution we need.
